Navigating the Trump Administration
Since he took office, President Trump's actions have created uncertainty and chaos, while doing nothing to lower the cost of living. Rep. Larson remains committed to standing up for everyone in Connecticut's First Congressional District who has been or could be impacted by these divisive and legally dubious actions.
Judges across the country have been halting legally dubious actions by the Trump Administration, including the President's executive order to end birthright citizenship and the 'deferred resignation offer' for federal workers. You can follow pending litigation against President Trump's actions here.
If you or your organization has been negatively impacted by the actions of the Trump Administration, you can safely contact the House Oversight Committee's Whistleblower Tipline.
Illegal Federal Funding 'Freeze'
President Trump's reckless 'freeze' on federal funding has impacted everything from childcare centers, lifesaving cancer treatments, health care providers, and more. Rep. Larson stood with state leaders to call out this unjust seizure of funds and highlight the stories of constituents and organizations who were impacted. After Connecticut and a coalition of states sued in federal court, it was halted by a federal judge. If this freeze has impacted you, please share your story here.
Heightened Immigration Enforcement
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been seen in East Hartford and other communities across Connecticut. Everyone is entitled to rights under the U.S. Constitution, regardless of immigration status. If you are an immigrant and have an encounter with ICE, it is important to know your rights. Additionally, the Trump Administration has enacted a policy allowing ICE to make arrests at schools and churches. The Connecticut State Department of Education has issued guidance for school districts to protect their students' rights in the event of interactions with ICE on school grounds.
Uncertainty for Federal Employees
On January 28th, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) e-mailed an unsanctioned 'deferred resignation offer' to federal employees, that promised full pay and benefits through September 30th. Congress has not authorized funding for this offer, and it is questionable whether President Trump has the authority to make it in the first place. Unions that represent federal employees are currently suing the Administration over another series of actions that undermine civil service protections for federal workers and aim to overturn approved collective bargaining agreements.
Cost-Raising Tariffs
President Trump unilaterally took action to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico, two of Connecticut's largest trading partners. These tariffs, which have not yet gone into effect, could result in a 25% price increase on cars Americans buy, lumber companies use to build homes, the fruit on families' tables, and so much more. The Center for American Progress estimates that President Trump's full tariff plan could increase taxes by up to $3,900 per year for the typical family. Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act with Reps. Suzan DelBene and Don Beyer to block the President from abusing his power to impose these cost-raising tariffs.
Rolling Back Anti-Discrimination Protections
The Trump Administration has taken swift action to end federal anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans and shut down Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives. While these orders rolled back decades of progress, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Supreme Court's 2020 Bostock v. Clayton County decision are still in effect. Employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, and gender identity remains illegal. President Trump has also issued orders banning transgender Americans from serving in the military and prohibiting the federal government from issuing documents with 'X' gender markers. Passports, visas, and Global Entry cards will no longer be processed for individuals who identify with a sex other than male or female, but existing documents remain valid.
