Voting and Elections

Rep. Larson is a forceful advocate for voting rights and fair elections and is fighting to end the influence of big money and to stamp out corruption in our politics. He led the Task Force on Election reform that laid the groundwork for landmark campaign finance reform to pass the House three times. He has received an A rating from the End Citizens United 2026 ECU Anti-Corruption Score Card and is a member of the End Corruption Caucus

Getting Big Money Out of Politics

Rep. Larson believes we must end the flood of big money that has corrupted our politics. He introduced the:

  • Fair Elections Now Act, to empower the voices of ordinary Americans over billionaires and special interest groups. Modeled after Connecticut’s successful Citizens’ Election Program, this bill would create a voluntary small dollar donation program for elections to the House of Representatives.

Rep Larson is a cosponsor of:

Ending Political Corruption

The Trump Administration and Supreme Court have opened the floodgates to political corruption. Public servants only job should be serving their constituents, which is why Rep. Larson introduced:

  • Ending DOGE Conflicts Act, to close loopholes that allow White House political appointees to dodge filing financial disclosure statements and work on areas where they have a conflict of interest.

Rep. Larson is also a cosponsor of:

Standing up to Trump's Attacks on Democracy

Rep. Larson believes we must take action to protect our democracy in the face of a president seeking to impose authoritarian rule.

Rep. Larson introduced:

  • H.Res.1155 to impeach President Trump on thirteen counts. These articles outline a clear and undeniable record of his corruption, high crimes, and violations of the Constitution, including abusing the pardon power by granting clemency to January 6th rioters seeking to overturn the 2020 elections,
  • Stop ICE Election Militarization Act, with Reps. Nikema Williams (GA-05) and Veronica Escobar (TX-16), to explicitly prevent immigration enforcement entities, including ICE, from being deployed at polling places and create criminal penalties for officers violating the law.

Rep. Larson opposed Republican anti-voting legislation, the so-called SAVE America Act and the SAVE Act. If signed into law, both bills would make it harder for Americans without passports, military service members, and married women to register to vote. The SAVE Act would force the 34.9% of Connecticut residents who do not have passports to pay over $152 million in passport fees and will create new voting barriers for the 747,439 Connecticut women with a name that does not match their birth certificate.

Rep. Larson is also working to investigate a ‘DOGE’ scheme to illegally share sensitive personal information with election denial groups with the stated purpose of overturning election results

Following the attempted insurrection instigated by President Trump after the 2020 election, Rep. Larson voted to pass of the Electoral Count Act in 2023. This bill overhauled the Electoral College vote process to ensure the will of the people cannot be subverted by those who want to alter the outcome of an election.

Voting Rights

Republican attacks on voting rights are being reinforced by the Supreme Court in a coordinated wave of suppression. To fight back, Rep. Larson is cosponsoring:

  •  John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, comprehensive legislation to restore and enhance Americans’ protections from discriminatory voting laws that seek to disenfranchise them.
  • H.J. Res. 196a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote, to ensure that all Americans have the legal right to access the ballot box.
  • Redistricting Reform Actto ban mid-decade redistricting efforts and require states to establish independent redistricting commissions so that opportunistic gerrymandering cannot further harm our elections. As the Trump Administration continues to pressure Republican-led states to pass new Congressional maps diluting the voices of Black and Hispanic voters this legislation is critical to protect their rights.
  • Voter Purge Protection Actto prevent states from improperly eliminating a voter’s registration and disenfranchising voters.

Finally, Rep. Larson believes that in order to pass any of these meaningful reforms, the Senate must abolish the filibuster as it exists. When Democrats control the House, Senate and the presidency, bills to protect voting rights, enact gun safety, and safeguard women’s reproductive rights passed the House of Representatives but never received a vote in the Senate chamber.  We have to end the Senate’s 60-vote requirement that stops progress in its tracks.

Rep. Larson's History of Fighting for Fair Elections

In 2008, even before the Citizens United decision, Rep. Larson was focused on the corrosive influence of money in politics, which is why he introduced the Fair Elections Now Act. Modeled after Connecticut’s successful Citizens Election Program, this legislation would create a voluntary small dollar donation program for House elections. This legislation garnered 165 cosponsors and passed the House Administration Committee in 2010, marking the furthest any matching program had advanced at that time.

Following the disastrous Citizens United decision, Rep. Larson was appointed by then-Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to chair the Task Force on Election Reform. Together, this taskforce crafted a package of bills to address campaign finance and voter empowerment.

Rep. Larson’s work on the Task Force laid the groundwork for the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, landmark comprehensive voting reform legislation. These bills included Larson’s Fair Elections Now Act, along with provisions to end partisan gerrymandering, provide funding and standards for election access and security, and guaranteed access to mail in and early voting. These advancements passed the House in in 20192021, and 2022, before being filibustered by Senate Republicans.
