Larson Announces American Rescue Plan Funding for Firefighter Recruitment and Retention in Newington

August 16, 2023

Newington, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced $45,000 in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan for firefighter recruitment and retention efforts in Newington.

“The number of volunteer firefighters has been on the decline nationwide for the past few decades, as recruiting and retaining an operational volunteer department can be exceptionally difficult,” said Larson. “I am thrilled to support Newington’s efforts with federal funding to increase community engagement with the Fire Department, including the purchase of a new sign to encourage new volunteers and notify the community of emergency alerts and updates.”

“This funding is important to the Newington Fire Department not only so they can communicate important educational messages to residents in a central location in town, but also to communicate in times of an emergency when other methods like internet service may be not functioning,” said State Representative Gary Turco. “Thank you, Congressman Larson, for securing this funding and investing in Newington’s safety.”

The Newington Volunteer Fire Department was awarded funding through the American Rescue Plan, legislation Rep. Larson helped author and pass to provide direct aid to communities, including more than $12 million to support COVID recovery efforts in Newington and more federal funding for fire departments and public safety initiatives nationwide.
