Washington, D.C. - Today, during a Republican hearing exploring cuts to Social Security, Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) called out their hypocrisy, demanding hearings with Social Security Administration whistleblower Charles Borges, who revealed that ‘DOGE’ employees copied the private and sensitive records of 300 million Americans to a vulnerable cloud. Chairman Estes would not commit to a hearing on the whistleblower report that could affect all Americans, even though last Congress, Republicans pursued a multi-year, fruitless inquiry into Hunter Biden.

This month marks the 90th anniversary of  Social Security, and while defenders of the program celebrate its legacy, they raise new warnings of what they call an increasingly real threat in the Trump era: privatization.

While wholesale replacement of the government-run retirement and disability program with private accounts has long been considered politically radioactive, advocates say recent actions by the Trump administration show it could happen, if not directly, then “through the back door.”

President Donald Trump's pick for commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics has argued for "sunsetting" Social Security, calling it a "Ponzi scheme."

Trump nominated Heritage Foundation economist E.J. Antoni to lead the BLS less than two weeks after firing the agency's former commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, in response to weaker-than-expected job numbers. The dismissal has fueled concerns that upcoming BLS reports could be altered to advance Trump's political agenda.
