Larson Votes to Reauthorize Long Island Sound Conservation Efforts

July 9, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Last night, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for the Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Reauthorization Act, bipartisan legislation led by Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) to protect and preserve the Sound.

“The Long Island Sound Watershed spans six states, helping to power the Northeast’s economy,” said Larson. “The Connecticut delegation has worked together for decades to preserve the Sound by protecting coastal habitats and combating pollution. Because of those efforts, federal funding has supported nearly 600 conservation projects, restoring thousands of acres of habitat and significantly reducing water pollution. I want to commend Rep. Courtney for working across the aisle to pass this critical bill for our region, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, for securing the largest ever funding levels for Long Island Sound conservation over the last two years. I will continue to work with the entire Connecticut delegation and my Long Island Sound Caucus colleagues to deliver federal funding to preserve our region's unique ecosystem.”

In 2006, the Connecticut delegation worked to pass the Long Island Sound Stewardship Act, dedicating federal resources to restore coastal habitats across the Sound. Since then, 2,239 acres of coastal habitat have been restored and 570 conservation projects have been funded. The Long Island Sound Restoration and Stewardship Reauthorization Act reauthorizes the Environmental Protection Agency’s program to protect and preserve the Sound through 2028.
