Larson Visits Summer Meals Site at Hartford City Mission

August 4, 2021

Hartford, CT – Yesterday, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) visited a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site, sponsored by the Community Renewal Team, at Hartford City Mission alongside End Hunger Connecticut's No Kid Hungry Youth Ambassadors. The SFSP is a federally-funded program that reimburses local sponsors who provide free, nutritious meals and snacks to children under the age of 18 during the summer.

"I have long been an advocate for programs to combat childhood hunger, and summer meals sites like the one I visited at Hartford City Mission today fill a crucial need to ensure that no kid goes hungry," said Larson. "It was inspiring to see the great work of these community groups to ensure that all children have access to meals when school is out of session."

"CT Summer Meals site sponsors have proven again this summer how strong and creative their teams are as they continued to serve meals to thousands of children during a pandemic. End Hunger CT! is grateful for the dedication of all the sponsors and the CT State Department of Education for feeding Connecticut's children and the support they provide to our communities every summer," said Katie Pachkovsky, End Hunger Connecticut! Nutrition Outreach & Advocacy Specialist. "We also appreciate the support of the No Kid Hungry Youth Ambassador program and the ACME Market Foundation which allowed us to host our two wonderful summer interns: Isis Murillo Bravo and Cecile O'Meara. Their hard work and passion for ending childhood hunger has been essential to helping End Hunger Connecticut! promote the USDA Summer Meals Program throughout CT this summer."

"Hartford City Mission is pleased to have partnered with the Community Renewal Team, House of Bread, and End Hunger CT to provide meals this summer for 75 Hartford Youth who participate in our Camp Noah program. We are grateful for the support and hard work of our Congressman, John B. Larson, working on behalf of CT families to fight against hunger," said Victor J. Rush, Executive Director of Hartford City Mission.

"During the summer months, CRT is proud to partner with groups like End Hunger CT and Hartford City Mission to ensure children in Hartford and neighboring towns have access to healthy, nutritious meals. By the time this summer is over, we expect to deliver more than 35,000 meals to kids in need," said GariannChiarella, Director of Nutrition for Community Renewal Team. "We're grateful to Congressman Larson for his commitment to this vital annual program for kids."

There are more than 400 summer meals sites across the State of Connecticut this year, where breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are available for free to all children under the age of 18. SFSP sites began operating in June and will continue to provide meals through the end of August. To find a site near you, visit CTSummerMeals.org.
