Larson Stands with Residents of New Hartford in Wake of New Hartford House Fire, Mourns the Loss of Firefighter Colin J. McFadden

August 17, 2021

Hartford, CT – Yesterday, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) visited the site of the three-alarm fire that destroyed the historic New Hartford House with New Hartford First Selectman Daniel Jerram.

"The historic New Hartford House was more than just a building, it was a landmark. This iconic site has been a community center in New Hartford for over 120 years," said Larson. "The fire resulted in a great loss for the town and Northwestern Connecticut as a whole. The response from New Hartford and surrounding towns, including 29 fire departments coming from as far as South Windsor, has been nothing short of remarkable. I commend First Selectman Dan Jerram for his leadership and thank our first responders on the scene and the community for their outpouring of support. The heroic efforts to both save the Town Hall and adjacent building will never be forgotten," said Larson.

"I send my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Burlington firefighter Colin J. McFadden, who left us far too soon. Mr. McFadden, a lifelong Bristol resident, was a dedicated member of the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. He will be remembered for so much more than his bravery and sacrifice," said Larson.

"The loss of the New Hartford House is a shock to all New Hartford residents. For many, many years, the New Hartford House was the center of our community and the location of many special celebrations. We're all saddened by the loss of such a historically significant building. As we continue to address the demolition and debris removal, we are mindful of the displaced tenants and will work tirelessly to address their needs. For those interested in learning more about the town's efforts, please contact the Town of New Hartford at 860-379-3389. Once the demolition is completed, we're committed to working with the owners of the property and helping them to rebuild on the same site," said First Selectman Daniel Jerram.

"On behalf of all the residents of New Hartford, we are saddened at the loss of Firefighter Colin J. McFadden. Like so many of his brothers and sisters that volunteer in Emergency Services, Colin cared for those around him and answered New Hartford's call for help when we needed him most. Colin is a hero that we'll never forget! From this day forward, Colin will always be known as a ‘Friend of New Hartford' and his memory will live on forever," said Jerram.

The New Hartford House carried historical and community significance for New Hartford, and there are already significant efforts underway for the recovery of displaced families and businesses.
