Larson, Courtney, DeLauro: Pratt & Whitney Will Remain Sole Provider of F-35 Propulsion
Washington, D.C. - Today, Reps. John B. Larson (CT-01), Joe Courtney (CT-02), and Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) praised the Pentagon’s announcement that Pratt & Whitney will be the sole source for F-35 engine upgrade work.
“I am both gratified and proud that the Pentagon is committing to sole source production of the F135 to Pratt & Whitney Aircraft over a costly alternative engine. This is the right decision for our warfighters, partner nations across the globe, and for American taxpayers,” said Larson. “The Pratt & Whitney F135 engine is the most advanced, reliable, and capable production fighter engine the world has ever known. Today’s announcement will save taxpayers tens of billions of dollars over the life of the program and protect thousands of manufacturing jobs in our state, ensuring that the best machinists and engineers in the world, from a manufacturing hub right here in Connecticut, will, as we proudly like to say, keep the eagle flying. I want to thank Reps. Courtney and DeLauro for their partnership and tireless advocacy for Connecticut workers and suppliers on the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, as well as Senators Blumenthal and Murphy, and our former Senators, Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, as the state delegation has been engaged in this fight for more than three decades. Rep. Larson has long been a champion for the F-35 engine program and is co-chair of the bipartisan Joint Strike Fighter Caucus. In the face of opposition from special interest groups supporting a costly alternative engine to the Connecticut-built F135, Rep. Larson led a coalition of machinists and bipartisan Members of Congress in support of engine modernization, resulting in President Biden’s support for the F135 Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) program in his Fiscal Year 2024 budget request.
As Ranking Members of the Appropriations Committee and Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, Reps. DeLauro and Courtney ensured the program was fully funded during committee markups of the FY 2024 National Defense Authorization and Defense Appropriation Acts in June. Leading up to today’s announcement, Pratt & Whitney was awarded a $66 million contract in July to support engine modernization efforts.
