Larson Blasts Trump Tariffs Targeting NATO Allies Over Greenland

January 17, 2026

East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01), a member of the House Trade Subcommittee, blasted President Trump’s new tariffs targeting imports from eight NATO allies who oppose his threats to annex Greenland. This week, as the President’s threats against Greenland intensified, Larson cosponsored the bipartisan No Funds for NATO Invasion Act to block Trump from using military force against Greenland or any NATO territory.

“President Trump’s arrogance is on full display once again, upping the ante with new tariffs that will make life even more expensive for Americans,” said Larson. “As costs continue to rise, the last thing anyone is asking for are higher prices here at home and another trade war further degrading our standing on the world stage. These threats have almost no support – they are just another example of Donald Trump’s ‘narcissistic nihilism.’ When Congress returns on Tuesday, we must immediately vote to end this president’s costly tariff regime. I join with my Democratic colleagues who are ready to act. Where are House Republicans?”

Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act with Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer (VA-08) to block presidents from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to impose tariffs that raise costs. He also introduced a bill with Rep. Linda Sanchez (CA-38) to suspend the President’s tariffs and require Congress to vote before new tariffs can go into effect, and filed a brief at the Supreme Court in support of a pending challenge to Trump’s tariff regime.
