Larson Applauds President Biden’s Day of Action Call to Protect Social Security from Trump and Musk’s Cuts

April 15, 2025

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) applauded former President Joe Biden’s Social Security Day of Action speech in Chicago defending Americans’ earned benefits from Trump and Musk’s cuts to Social Security.

“Trump and Musk have made it clear that Social Security is on the chopping block, even calling it ‘the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time’” said Larson. “I applaud President Biden for speaking out against their devastating cuts that are making it more difficult for Americans to access their hard-earned benefits. At the direction of the White House, Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ is closing Social Security offices, firing thousands of workers, and aiming to cut services for millions of our seniors. They are breaking Social Security from the inside, so they can slash benefits and privatize it to pay for more tax breaks for billionaires! House Republicans have continued to stay silent in the face of these attacks, but Democrats stood united all across the country today, to not just protect Social Security, but enhance benefits. As President Biden has said, Social Security is a ‘sacred trust’ that Americans have paid into and depended on for 90 years. Will Congress heed his call to take action, or will they continue to bow down to Trump, Musk, and the billionaires?”

During his time in office, President Biden called for enhancing benefits by ‘scrapping the cap’ on Americans making more than $400,000, so they pay into Social Security throughout the entire year. He became the first President to call for enhancing benefits since the 1970s.

On today’s Social Security Day of Action, House Democrats spoke out across the country to oppose the Trump Administration’s cuts to the Social Security Administration and Republicans’ plans to cut benefits and pass a new tax break for the wealthy. Rep. Larson took to the Middletown field office with Senator Richard Blumenthal, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, workers and retirees to tell Trump and Musk: hands off Social Security!
