Larson Announces $250,000 Grant for Hartford Public Library
Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced that the Hartford Public Library has been awarded a $250,000 grant by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) through the Fiscal Year 2021 Citizenship and Integration Grant Program.
“I am proud of Hartford’s legacy of welcoming immigrants with open arms,” said Larson. “The Hartford Public Library is home to a citizenship preparation program that has been nationally recognized , and today’s grant announcement will allow the Library to expand their services and ensure Hartford remains a city of opportunity for all residents. This grant and the recognition that the Library has received speaks to the great work of the Library’s CEO, Bridget Quinn, Homa Naficy, and the Hartford Public Library staff.”
“Given that the pathway to citizenship can be daunting and lengthy for many hard-working immigrants, Hartford Public Library’s recent USCIS award will allow us to continue offering both cost-free Citizenship application and educational support. We are privileged to provide such life-changing services,” said Homa Naficy, Executive Director of The American Place at Hartford Public Library.
“The Hartford Public Library has been a national leader in supporting our immigrant community, with free ESL classes, after-school programs for immigrant teens, green card assistance, and citizenship services, and this significant grant will allow them to continue their incredible work,” said Mayor Luke Bronin. “The Hartford Public Library is the only library in the country to get a grant like this, and that’s a testament to the leadership of Bridget Quinn, Homa Naficy, and their entire team. Hartford has long been a place where immigrants from around the world are welcomed and supported – and they strengthen our community every single day. We are grateful to Congressman Larson for his strong support for this grant, and his strong and consistent support for Hartford Public Library and Hartford’s immigrant community.”
The Hartford Public Library is one of 40 organizations across the country to receive a grant this year from the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program. This grant funding will support services to prepare lawful permanent residents for naturalization as U.S. citizens.
