Larson and Colleagues Introduce Bill to Prevent Tax Hike on Middle-Class Families

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) joined Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and a group of his Democratic colleagues on the Ways and Means Committee to introduce the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act, legislation to block the President from bypassing Congress to impose tariffs or quotas that would raise costs for working families.
“President-elect Trump has vowed to deliver more cash breaks for the wealthy and large corporations while imposing broad tariffs on the American people,” said Larson. “At a time when people are struggling to make ends meet, his plan could hike the typical family’s costs by thousands of dollars. No president should be able to abuse their power to raise costs on the American people, and our bill will block the incoming Administration from doing just that. House Democrats stand ready to work across the aisle to make life more affordable for our constituents. We will not stand by and let the next President increase the prices of everyday goods while the wealthy get another tax break they do not need.”
On the campaign trail, President-elect Trump laid out a plan to cut taxes for the wealthy and large corporations while imposing sweeping tariffs on imports. The Center for American Progress estimates that his plan could increase taxes by up to $3,900 per year for the typical family.
House Democrats have introduced bills to cut taxes for working families and seniors while ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share. Rep. Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act would cut taxes for approximately 23 million middle-income Social Security beneficiaries. He is also an original cosponsor of Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s American Family Act, to expand the Child Tax Credit to up to $3,600 per year for families.
