Southington secures funding to advance flood prevention efforts
SOUTHINGTON — Southington recently received federal funding that will help with flood mitigation efforts in Plantsville.
The $300,000 in federal funding from FEMA will be put toward conducting a comprehensive engineering study that will evaluate existing conditions in the area and lead to identifying long-term solutions to reduce flooding, protecting homes and businesses and strengthening critical infrastructure.
With limited existing information available through FEMA, the Southington Engineering Department said the study is much needed and an important step.
Plantsville has experienced recurring flooding for decades due to its position along the Quinnipiac River, according to town officials. The federal grant works to address this issue and coincides with the broader efforts to revitalize Plantsville. This includes the Plantsville Safety and Streetscape Project completed in June 2023.
"When we invested in traffic safety and beautification projects, the goal was not only to improve quality of life but also to attract visitors, support local businesses and encourage economic development,” said state Rep. Chris Poulos, D-Southington. "Reducing flood risks helps protect those investments and ensures that Plantsville remains a safe, vibrant and resilient community for generations to come."
The funds were secured in partnership with Poulos, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-1st District.
