Hartford one step closer to getting new federal courthouse
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Hartford is one step closer to getting a new federal courthouse.
The new building will hold many more courtrooms than currently can fit in the existing Abe Ribicoff Federal Building.
Top lawmakers met with union leaders Monday morning to announce a project labor agreement.
The federal government is looking to park a new, almost $400 million federal courthouse, which is now a surface lot between People’s Bank Arena and Union Station. The current federal courthouse is just too small.
“Starting with the increase that’s needed and also the building is old, etcetera,” said U.S. Rep. John Larson (D-1st District).
Congressman Larson and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) met with union officials to talk about a courthouse project long in the works.
“This has been baking for 9 years, since 2017, and along the way, we’ve been jumping every hurdle and checking every box,” said Joe Toner, executive director of the Connecticut State Building Trades Council.
The federal government has worked out what is called a project labor agreement (PLA) with the local building trades. That guarantees these will be union jobs and they will last the length of the project.
“People know that they’re going to have a secure job, but with benefits and also a skill set and safety measures that come with a PLA agreement,” Larson said.
Roughly a third of workers are expected to be Hartford residents, who will then be spending that money in the local economy.
“It means that more people can afford to buy homes in our state and in our city,” said Mayor Arunan Arulampalam (D-Hartford). “It means that more people can afford their health care. It means that more people can afford to live the kind of life that they should live when they are contributing so much to building our cities and our states.”
Officials hope to break ground in the summer of 2027, with the building completed sometime in 2030.
