Ranking Members Larson, Neal, Davis: Jeopardizing the Social Security Administration Jeopardizes Social Security Beneficiaries

February 26, 2025

Washington, D.C. - Today, Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01), Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (MA-01), and Worker and Family Support Subcommittee Ranking Member Danny K. Davis (IL-07) released the following statement amid reports that the Trump Administration is closing Social Security field offices and shuttering SSA’s Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity:

“Our phones are ringing off the hooks with reports of Social Security field office closures and now reports that the Social Security Administration’s Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity and Office of Transformation were shuttered. We must be clear – attacking the Social Security Administration’s ability to deliver benefits is an attack on the American’s people’s benefits themselves. Elon Musk and his unaccountable ‘DOGE’ have been tasked with finding $2 trillion in cuts to pay for Trump's tax handouts for the wealthy and are now taking aim at Social Security to find them. Purging dedicated civil servants when SSA is already at their lowest staffing level in decades will do nothing to make the government run more efficiently but will devastate people’s ability to access their benefits.

“Democrats are united against any attempt to gut the Social Security Administration. It will only take a handful of House Republicans to join us and stop these cuts. Will they stand up for their constituents?”
