Larson Welcomes Reopening of Social Security Offices

April 4, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (CT-01) welcomed Social Security Administration (SSA) Acting Commissioner Kijakazi’s announcement that Social Security field offices will be resuming in-person services on April 7th

“There is no replacement for the in-person services a Social Security field office offers to beneficiaries. I welcome Acting Commissioner Kijakazi’s announcement that field offices will safely reopen to the public on April 7th.  This will allow some of our most vulnerable neighbors access to the benefits they have earned,” said Larson. “I applaud the Social Security Administration leadership and the agency’s employees for working together to serve the American people.”

Larson worked closely with SSA on the reopening of field offices, sending letters about the need to ensure the safety of visitors and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to ensure that the most vulnerable individuals can access SSA services. He also requested a GAO study on access to SSA services during the pandemic including the disproportionate impact that the closure of field offices to most in-person visitors had on people of color and other historically underserved populations.
