Larson Votes to Keep Government Open, Avoid Devastating Shutdown

January 18, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted to extend government funding and avoid a devastating shutdown.

“Today, I voted to keep government open and avoid a devastating shutdown that would hurt American families,” said Larson. “As we continue to negotiate full-year funding, I implore Speaker Johnson and House Republicans to scrap their plans to create a closed-door secret commission that would cut Social Security benefits for 70 million Americans. Instead, we should be striving to work together to protect and enhance these benefits for women, children, the elderly, and our veterans. We must deliver for the American people, and Democrats are ready to work together to address the issues affecting everyday Americans, like the need to enhance Social Security for the first time in more than 50 years.”

Earlier today, the House Budget Committee voted to advance Republicans’ fiscal commission proposal that would gut the benefits 70 million Americans depend on.
