Larson Votes to Fund Government, Calls on Republicans to Stop Playing Games

December 2, 2021

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted for H.R. 6119, the Further Extending Government Funding Act. This legislation continues federal government funding at the fiscal year 2021 level with minimal changes until February 18, 2022, except for the provision of $7 billion to assist Afghan evacuees.

"Today's vote was necessary to avoid a government shutdown because one legislative branch of the U.S. Congress hasn't voted out a single Appropriations bill and continues to use a rule to politicize the nation's needs. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say you need 60 votes to pass a bill. Only in the United States Senate has this practice continued to be routinely used to politicize the process and put the nation in jeopardy. The House-passed Appropriations bills still sit in the Senate, along with 200+ plus other bills, including Universal Background Checks, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and more. Members of Congress take an oath of office and swear allegiance to the Constitution and have a responsibility to vote. The Senate is failing to do the fundamental thing its Members are sent here to do. I commend Chair Rosa DeLauro for her hard work leading the Appropriations process," said Larson.
