Larson Votes Against Trump-Republican Budget Plan That Cuts Medicaid and SNAP to Pay for Billionaire Tax Break

April 10, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted against the Trump-Republican budget plan that would cut Medicaid, SNAP nutrition benefits, and other critical programs American families rely on to pay for another round of tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent.

“This past weekend, people from coast to coast made it clear – hands off Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,” said Larson. “However, House Republicans have chosen to ignore the pleas of their constituents and voted to advance the largest cut to Medicaid in history – to the tune of over $880 billion. Make no mistake – Trump and Musk want Congress to make these cuts so they can pay for another round of tax breaks for themselves and their billionaire friends. They will not lose a moment’s sleep over the harm they create. I am proud that Democrats stood together, united against these devastating cuts. We will continue the fight to protect Medicaid, Social Security, and SNAP nutrition benefits for the millions of Americans who rely on these programs to make ends meet and access the care they need. Will any of our Republican colleagues see the error of their ways and join us, or will they continue to allow their constituents to foot the bill for a billionaire tax break?”

The Trump-Republican budget would:

  • Deliver a $4.5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy, an average annual tax cut of $314,266 for the richest 0.1% of Americans

  • Threaten Husky coverage for 135,355 CT-01 residents through Medicaid, including 48,894 children and 15,861 seniors

  • Reduce or eliminate SNAP nutrition benefits for 40,993 CT-01 residents

  • Hike health care premiums by $1,550/year for 24,000 CT-01 residents who are enrolled through the Access Health CT exchange
