Larson Votes Against Extreme Republican Legislation to Divert Funding from Poor Children to Dangerous Anti-Abortion Centers

January 18, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted against H.R. 6918, extreme Republican legislation that would divert assistance from America’s most impoverished families to dangerous anti-abortion centers.

“Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, women across the country have had their lives endangered because they could not access abortion care, forced to flee their states and forced to bear devastating medical consequences,” said Larson. “If we care about life, we should be doing everything in our power to stop the government from standing in the way between women and their doctors. I am deeply disappointed that we are instead passing legislation to support centers that exist to deter women from receiving treatment they may need, often through deceptive means. I am proud that in Connecticut, we became the first state in the nation to guarantee the right to safe and legal abortion at the state level, and I will continue to fight alongside my Democratic colleagues to restore abortion rights nationwide.”

Last week, Rep. Larson spoke in opposition to this legislation in the House Ways and Means Committee.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, twenty-one states have moved to ban abortion or restrict the procedure, criminalizing reproductive health care services for millions of women.

When Rep. Larson served as State Senate President pro tempore, Connecticut became the first state in the nation to guarantee access to codify the protections set by Roe v. Wade into state law. Larson is an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would restore abortion rights nationwide.
