Larson: Trump’s Blatant Lies About Social Security Must Not Go Unanswered

March 4, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement blasting President Trump’s repeated blatant lies about Social Security during his Joint Address to Congress, where he falsely asserted many people as old as 150 are fraudulently receiving Social Security benefits.

“According to a dozen top sources and counting, Donald Trump is lying to the nation about people who are reportedly deceased and receiving Social Security benefits," said Larson. "Everyone, from his own Acting Social Security Commissioner to Kathleen Romig at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and nearly every major media outlet, has fact-checked and disproven these claims. Donald Trump has called Social Security a ‘scam’ and Elon Musk has called it a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ The real scam here is Donald Trump and Elon Musk lying to the American people so they can find $2 trillion in cuts to pay for their tax breaks for billionaires. Americans have a right to know the truth, and the real agenda. That is why we are demanding and calling for an immediate hearing before the Ways and Means Committee in Congress on their allegations. If they are true and substantiated with facts, I will owe an apology to the President of the United States for calling him a liar. If, on the other hand, they are false, as so many sources have concluded, the President will owe an apology to the American people. In a democracy, the way that is determined... is through the public hearing process, where we are asking Mr. Musk and his ‘DOGE’ proteges to back up and support their claims, as well as hearing from the sources who claim this is untrue. Both Democrats and Republicans will have the opportunity to interrogate and ask questions, and the American people will therefore be able to determine the truth.”
