Larson: Trump Has Earned the Title of Conman-in-Chief, Seniors Know a Con When They Hear It

August 8, 2024

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after Donald Trump called for ‘changes’ to Social Security in a Fox News interview.

“Donald Trump has earned the title Conman-in-Chief...seniors get it. Some may have been born at night, but not last night...they know a con when they hear it,” said Larson. “At a time when 70 million Americans rely on Social Security and 10,000 Baby Boomers a day are becoming eligible, they are keenly aware of what affects their wallets. Donald, you may be able to fool some of the people some of the time, but most Americans are on to the Conman-in-Chief. His new scam is a tax cut that is unpaid for, but in truth, will only further hurt the Social Security Trust Fund. Trump, the Conman-in-Chief, proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security every year he was in office while passing massive cash breaks for the wealthiest one percent, which added $1.9 trillion to the national debt. President Biden and Vice President Harris have called to ‘scrap the cap’ so the wealthy pay their fair share into Social Security just like everyone else. This will allow us to enhance benefits and cut taxes for seniors on Social Security, and it's actually paid for! As the saying goes, trust everyone but cut the cards, and when it comes to Donald Trump, the nation needs not only to cut the cards, but a re-shuffle, and the people need a real deal.”
