Larson: Trump and Republicans in Congress Continue to Target Seniors’ Hard-Earned Benefits for Cuts
East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Washington Posthighlighted a report revealing former President Donald Trump’s plans for Social Security could drain the Trust Funds in six years.
“I am glad to see the news media shine a light on the real impact of Donald Trump’s plans for Social Security,” said Larson. “While he continues to peddle an unpaid for tax cut that could result in automatic benefit cuts for seniors, the facts are clear: the former President and his Republican allies in Congress have targeted seniors’ hard-earned benefits for cuts. Ironically, when he was President, Democrats put forward a plan to cut taxes for seniors and expand Social Security, and Donald Trump ignored it, instead annually calling for cuts to Social Security in his budgets. Adding insult to injury, he did this while passing massive cash breaks for the wealthiest one percent. Democrats are united around President Biden and Vice President Harris’ call to strengthen Social Security by ‘scrapping the cap’ on people making more than $400,000 a year, so they pay their fair share in to the program, just like everyday Americans. Social Security 2100 will enhance benefits for the first time in more than 50 years, extend the program’s solvency by decades, and cut taxes for seniors without putting their hard-earned benefits at risk.”
