Larson Statement on Vote to Raise Debt Ceiling

October 12, 2021

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the House passed a short-term debt ceiling fix.

"Americans cannot afford for the United States government to default on its obligations, especially during a pandemic. Not doing so would result in programs, like Social Security, not being able to pay people their benefits on time. This is the third time House Democrats have voted to address the debt ceiling, and even still, due to Republican obstruction, we will be forced to address it again in December. During President Trump's tenure Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling, while their tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations and other spending added $8 trillion to the national debt. It's time for them to stop playing games and do what's right for the American people," said Larson.
