Larson Statement on the Retirement of Rep. Steny Hoyer

January 8, 2026

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on Rep. Steny Hoyer’s (MD-05) retirement announcement.

“Steny Hoyer has dedicated his life to public service from the Maryland State Senate to becoming the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives,” said Larson. “I have been proud to work alongside Steny on several major issues from the passage of the Affordable Care Act to supporting our nation’s firefighters as Co-Chairs of the Fire Services Caucus to calling out Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine. Through it all, the people of Maryland’s Fifth District have remained his number one priority. What I admire most is his respect for the institution and his principled leadership in ensuring that our Democratic Republic remained strong and that the process of governing functioned as the Founding Fathers intended. This year, America will mark its 250th anniversary, and Steny’s nearly 60 years of public service and his lasting legacy are an important part of this history. I am grateful to count him not just as a colleague, but a friend, and I will miss his leadership and dedication to a better future for all Americans. I wish him, his wife, Elaine, and the entire Hoyer family the best for this next chapter."
