Larson Statement on Republican Budget Plan Proposing $1.5 Trillion in Cuts to Social Security

March 20, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Republican Study Committee (RSC), the largest caucus of House Republicans, released a budget plan that calls for raising the retirement age and $1.5 trillion in cuts to Social Security.

“Only a week after Donald Trump called for cuts to Social Security on national television, Republicans in Congress released their plan to get it done,” said Larson. “Their budget makes $1.5 trillion in cuts to Social Security benefits, even raising the retirement age. Because they know these cuts are unpopular with the American people, the RSC does not reveal how many years they would raise the age nor how they would ‘phase out’ other benefits. President Biden was clear during the State of the Union: rather than cutting benefits, it’s time to strengthen Social Security by not gouging the middle class but instead making those who currently pay nothing contribute their fair share, and Democrats are united with him in this fight. We will never let the Republicans cut the benefits Americans have earned through a lifetime of hard work. We will protect Social Security from these devastating cuts and enhance benefits for the first time in more than 50 years.”
