Larson Statement on the 90th Anniversary of Social Security

August 14, 2025

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the 90th anniversary of Social Security.

“90 years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Social Security into law to ensure our seniors could retire with dignity – since then, it has never missed a payment,” said Larson. “Now, President Donald Trump is jeopardizing that record of success. Since he took office, 20% of field office staff has been cut, Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ has tried twice to slash phone services, and Trump’s own Treasury Secretary admitted their back-door scheme to privatize benefits. While we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we must also recognize that Social Security is under attack, and even today, five million seniors continue to live in poverty. Reckless ‘DOGE’ cuts and the privatization of Social Security are happening right before our eyes, but Democrats have a plan to stop them in their tracks. Under the leadership of Hakeem Jeffries, House Democrats will be moving forward on a bill to not only protect Social Security from this President but enhance benefits so seniors can keep up with rising costs. It is time to not just speak up, but act, and that is exactly what we are prepared to do.”

Ranking Member Larson has put forward a plan to enhance Social Security benefits, and has also introduced legislation to protect Social Security from cuts, keep field offices open, and prevent Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ from accessing beneficiaries’ personal records.

Today, Larson hosted a public forum in East Hartford today to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security and discuss his efforts in Congress to protect and enhance it. Photos from today’s forum are available HERE.

Yesterday, he joined Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-06), former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley, and advocates from across the country on a national town hall to call for action. You can view his remarks and watch the town hall HERE.
