Larson Statement on 20th Anniversary of the War in Iraq
East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the 20th anniversary of the war in Iraq. Larson voted against the Iraq War and has called for the repeal of the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs, authorizing the use of military force in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Having lived through the Vietnam War, it guided my decision to oppose the wrongheaded war in Iraq,” said Larson. “I traveled to Iraq with the late Rep. John Murtha three times, meeting with our military leaders and troops, and each visit reinforced my decision to oppose the war. I have cosponsored legislation to repeal the overly broad and still used Iraq War authorization and was proud when it passed the House last year. Congress must reclaim its constitutional responsibility for declarations of war.
“We will never forget the sacrifices our troops and their families made for this war. I heard from many families during that time, and their stories stay with me to this day,” Larson continued.
