Larson Statement on the 10th Anniversary of the Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary

December 14, 2022

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the 10th anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

“A full decade has passed since 26 innocent lives were stolen at Sandy Hook Elementary, and my thoughts are with their families and friends today,” said Larson. “There have been more shootings across our nation than there are days in the year in 2022. We made progress when the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was signed into law this year, and I commend Senators Blumenthal and Murphy for their dedicated efforts, but we must do more. I was proud to vote for eight gun safety provisions that have remained in the Senate blocked by the filibuster. Americans are not fooled anymore. They want universal background checks. They want an assault weapons ban. The Senate cloture vote can no longer stand in the way of protecting our communities. Americans want safety and action, and it is past time we deliver.

“In Connecticut, the parents and survivors of Sandy Hook and Mothers United Against Violence are some of our most eloquent spokespeople who advocate for action. We must honor them and ensure Americans can go to school, the grocery store, a nightclub, and a movie theatre and come home safely,” Larson continued.
