Larson Sponsors Legislation to Lower Prescription Drug Prices

July 28, 2023

Washington, D.C. - Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) co-sponsored new legislation led by House Democrats to further lower prescription drug prices for American families: the Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act. This legislation builds on consumer price protections Democrats passed last year in the Inflation Reduction Act that empower Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs for seniors by making those lower prices available to those on private health insurance. It also reins in pharmaceutical price gouging.

“Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, over 1 million Connecticut seniors will see lower drug prices. Still, we can and must go further. This legislation would mean even more constituents would directly benefit and even more prescription drugs would have their prices negotiated lower,” said Larson. “We have heard horror stories of people having to cut back or skip doses of their medication because it is too expensive, and it is not right that Americans pay three, five, or even ten times as much for their prescription drugs as people in other countries. No one should have to choose between their life-sustaining medication and paying their bills, and this legislation would be another step forward to ensure no American is making that choice. We must make this bill law to expand drug price negotiation and rein in price gouging, and I will keep fighting to lower health care and prescription drug costs for hardworking American families!”
