Larson: This Shutdown Throws Our Country into Further Chaos

December 21, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the impending government shutdown:

"Border security is imperative in our nation, however building a $5 billion wall is not the answer and not the security measures our country would need. This funding is a waste of American taxpayers' hard-earned money. Between Secretary Mattis resigning, the President pulling troops out of Syria and Afghanistan, and the stock market plunging, the President's decision to have a government shutdown over a border wall is throwing our country into chaos. This is not the way to run our country.

"Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican from Texas, who has the largest amount of border in his district, 820 miles, and is a former CIA agent, called the border wall a fallacy and said, ‘It's not how many miles of a wall that is going to keep us safe, it's are we keeping bad people and drugs out of our country? And the best way to do that is with technology and manpower. Building a wall from sea to shining sea is the most expensive and least effective way to do border security.'

"We need to listen to the experts, like Rep. Hurd, fund the government, and invest in actual effective ways to protect our borders."
