Larson-Requested Taxpayer Relief Approved by Treasury

March 22, 2019

Hartford, CT – Today, the U.S. Department of Treasury announced relief for taxpayers who have under-withheld this tax season. Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) requested this relief alongside Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27). They wrote a letter to the Treasury Department asking for taxpayers who under withheld this year not to be penalized. After the rushed GOP Tax Law that passed in late 2017, many taxpayers did not adjust their withholdings, resulting in many of them under withholding.

Today's announcement will allow the IRS to provide penalty relief for individuals whose total withholding and estimated tax payments for 2018 are equal to or greater than 80 percent of their taxes owed.

"This is welcomed and necessary relief for taxpayers in Connecticut and across the country. In 2017 the Republicans rushed their tax law through Congress, not allowing Americans to have their say, and this tax season they're now seeing the real effects. There is more to do to fix this disastrous tax law, but it is welcomed news that taxpayers will be provided with some relief if they under withheld," said Larson.
