Larson: The Republican Budget Threatens the Future of Social Security

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Social Security Administration’s Chief Actuary released a report revealing the Republican Budget would speed up the insolvency of the Social Security Trust Funds.
“Not only does the Republican budget kick 15 million people off their health care and slash SNAP nutrition benefits for seniors, children, and veterans – a new report is revealing how it threatens the solvency of Social Security,” said Larson. “As many as 96 percent of Americans view Social Security as important, but President Trump and our Republican colleagues have a different priority – more tax breaks for billionaires, on the backs of middle-class families. Social Security is an earned benefit that lifts 22 million Americans out of poverty, including nearly one million children. Still, five million of our seniors live in poverty, many after a lifetime of hard work. House Democrats are united behind protecting Social Security against Donald Trump and the Republicans’ attacks and enhancing benefits across the board for the first time in more than 50 years. It is time to act.”
