Larson: President Trump is Using Service Members As Wedge in Fight Against Social Security
Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Department of Defense (DOD) confirmed that all members of the United States military in the income range specified by President Trump’s executive order will have their Social Security payroll taxes deferred.
“President Trump is attempting to defund Social Security at the expense of 1.3 million active duty service members and veterans. His ill-conceived half measures taken through executive action continue to cause chaos. The deferment of their Social Security contributions will result in thousands of military service members paying double taxes next year. This faux tax cut is designed to boost the President’s political standing and will only result in a headache for those who serve our country and work to keep us safe,” said Larson.
Last week, Larson introduced the Save our Social Security Now Act with Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal and 19 colleagues to overturn President Trump’s executive action to defer payroll contributions. They also introduced a resolution of disapproval working in a parallel effort with Senators Schumer and Wyden, to initiate a Congressional Review Act resolution to expedite the vote.
