Larson Nominates Rep. Liz Cheney for Profile in Courage Award

January 6, 2022

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) nominated Rep. Liz Cheney (WY-AL) for the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

"In the face of violence and vitriol, one woman stood fast against the ‘Big Lie' and those who attacked the Capitol in order to overturn a free and fair election," said Larson. "As a former Democratic Caucus Chair, I understand the weight and responsibility that Rep. Cheney faced as Chair of the House Republican Conference when those in her party rejected our most central beliefs. Although we rarely vote in a common way, I commend her bravery. By putting America and our democratic Republic ahead of her party, Congresswoman Cheney risked her reputation, her career, and her personal safety."

"While other members of the Republican Conference have lined up behind Donald Trump's rhetoric fueling the ‘Big Lie' that the 2020 election was stolen, which incited an insurrection against the U.S. Capitol one year ago today, Rep. Cheney urged her colleagues to do their jobs and verify the election results," Larson continued.

Rep. Cheney voted on January 6th to certify the 2020 Presidential Election following the insurrection, standing in opposition to 139 of her House Republican colleagues. She also led a group of 10 House Republicans in voting to impeach then-President Donald Trump, and now serves as Vice-Chair of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Cheney has condemned those who continue to spread false claims about the 2020 election, stating that they are "turning their back on the rule of law and poisoning our democratic system."
