Larson-led Bill to Support Family Resource Centers Advances Out of Committee

July 24, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after H.R. 9076, which included his bipartisan Promoting Community-Based Prevention Services Act, passed out of the Ways and Means Committee, advancing to the House Floor.

“I want to thank Rep. Mike Carey for introducing legislation with me to support children and families, and all of my Ways and Means colleagues who voted to move this critical bill forward,” said Larson. “I was fortunate to work with Dr. Edward Zigler, ‘the father of Head Start,’ and today’s legislation embodies the work his life was focused on, which we passed in Connecticut nearly 40 years ago. What started as three Family Resource Centers has grown into 58 across the state, serving nearly 13,000 individuals annually, providing them with childcare and health screenings, and connecting them with federal assistance. Dr. Zigler understood the need to connect vulnerable children and families to vital resources and pull Americans out of poverty. He was ahead of his time, and I am honored to continue to advance his vision with today’s vote. I look forward to a strong, bipartisan vote in the full House.

“I also would be remiss if I did not thank Matia Finn-Stevenson, Cecilia ‘Cece’ Woods, Frederica Gray, and Patti Russo for their advocacy for Family Resource Centers during our work in the Connecticut State Senate. Thank you for your work and dedication to Connecticut’s families,” Larson concluded.
