LARSON JOINS DELEGATION TRIP ON 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY INVASION

WASHINGTON, D.C.-U.S. Congressman John B. Larson (CT-1) will be part of a delegation of House Members to travel to England and France to participate in ceremonies paying tribute to the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion this week.

The delegation is being led by Speaker Hastert and will also include John D. Dingell, Charles B. Rangel, Ralph Regula, James L. Oberstar, Ike Skelton, Thomas E. Petri, Lane Evans, John M. Spratt, Jr., Amo Houghton, Peter T. King, Robert W. Ney, John B. Shadegg, Mark E. Souder, Todd Tiahrt, Jerry Moran, Randy Forbes, Jeff Miller and former Minority Leader Robert H. Michel.

?It is an honor to attend the events surrounding the 60th anniversary of D-Day invasion,? said Larson. ?I look forward to paying tribute to the brave souls who put their lives on the line or made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of defeating tyranny and liberating the occupied nations of Europe. Free people everywhere are forever indebted to the countless Americans and allied troops who participated in the war effort and stormed the beaches that day to vanquish the Nazi occupiers. So many gave their lives to defeat the axis powers so that their generation and every generation thereafter could live in freedom. We have an obligation to honor them and recognize this anniversary.?

According to the Speaker?s office, the delegation will stop first in Cambridge, England on June 4, to participate in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the American Cemetery in Cambridge, where many of the paratroopers who participated in the D-Day left from. On June 5, the delegation will visit Omaha Beach and attend a Mass celebrated by Francis Cardinal George, the Archbishop of Chicago. After the Mass, the delegation will go to St. Mere Eglise, to witness the members of the 82nd Airborne reenact the historic airdrop that started the D-day offensive. On June 6, the delegation will participate in the Bi-National Ceremony at Omaha Beach with President Bush and will later tour Utah beach.
