Larson Introduces Resolution with Ways and Means Committee Democrats to Compel ‘DOGE’ Transparency on Unlawful Treasury Payment System Access

Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) introduced a Resolution of Inquiry alongside every Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee to compel the Trump Administration to provide comprehensive information on the data accessed by Elon Musk and DOGE within 14 days.
“While Elon Musk and his ‘DOGE’ cronies set their sights on Americans’ hard-earned benefits, including Social Security, I am standing firm to demand answers,” said Larson. “My constituents have been shocked by Musk’s unfettered access to sensitive information, including the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of Americans. There is no reason why an unelected, unconfirmed, and unaccountable billionaire should have access to such sensitive data. The Administration must stop dodging the United States Congress and the American people who are looking for answers after this unprecedented breach of privacy on their watch.”
“Privacy is next to liberty in our Democratic system, yet the President and his billionaire cabinet are jeopardizing that standard for their own power and enrichment and House Republicans haven’t so much as raised an eyebrow,” said Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal. “Every time this Administration threatens the health and well-being of the American people, Ways and Means Democrats will be there fighting and sounding the alarm, and I applaud Ranking Member Doggett for his steadfast leadership in exposing DOGE and protecting the American people’s data.”
“These unprecedented times call for this rarely used tool to seek answers to questions Trump has authorized DOGE to dodge. ‘Trust Musk’ is just not acceptable,” said Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Lloyd Doggett. “We can unite in support of this reasonable Resolution to seek the transparency and accountability Americans deserve unless Republicans want to remain complicit with the wrongdoing.”
Lawmakers are giving the President and the Secretary of the Treasury 14 days to provide all documents and copies, records, audio recordings, memorandum, and more, to the House of Representatives relating to the following (1) access to, and usage of, Treasury’s payment systems by Elon Musk and DOGE; (2) access to, and usage of, confidential taxpayer information under Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code by Elon Musk and DOGE; and (3) any screenshots taken by Elon Musk and DOGE of Treasury payment systems data or records.
Rep. Larson has continued to demand answers about the breach of Americans’ sensitive data. He joined every Ways and Means Committee Democrat to send letters to the Treasury Secretary, the Acting IRS Commissioner, and the Acting Social Security Commissioner to determine what information has been accessed by Elon Musk and DOGE, and who authorized its release. Additionally, he introduced the Taxpayer Data Protection Actwith the Connecticut House delegation and House Democrats to end DOGE’s access to taxpayer information.
