Larson: House Republicans are Bowing Down to Billionaire Demands for a Holiday Shutdown

December 18, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after billionaire Elon Musk demanded Republicans back out of a bipartisan agreement to keep government open.

“It is unbelievable that an unelected billionaire operating outside of the cabinet and United States Congress is demanding House Republicans to back out of a bipartisan agreement and ordering a holiday shutdown,” said Larson. “I 100% agree with Leader Jeffries. If Republicans back out of a good faith deal, they are leaving families to suffer. By bowing down to a billionaire, they have made the decision to act as mere puppets in the process instead of duly elected representatives. I find this whole ordeal deeply upsetting because at the end of the day, a government shutdown will not impact Elon Musk, Donald Trump, or anyone of their class one iota – it is everyday American families who will pay the price. Federal workers and our troops will go without pay while billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump get their Christmas wish to grind the government to a halt. Connecticut farmers who have been fighting for the support they need to bounce back after severe flooding and frost will be left with nothing. We must get serious and keep the government open to deliver for the people we are sworn to serve.”
