May 16, 2023

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) highlighted the need for Congress to act on the debt ceiling as Republicans plan to hold the economy hostage until they get cuts to essential programs, including Medicaid and SNAP nutrition benefits. Larson also questioned hearing witness, Dr. Rick Gilfillan who is the Former Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Director and former CEO of Trinity Health, about health care transparency measures to improve patient understanding and outcomes.

“Keeping in mind the issue of transparency, I think we have to be transparent that while we’re having this hearing, what Americans are concerned about is the fact that we’re about to default on the dollar,” said Larson. “We have a responsibility in this Committee to deal with the debt ceiling, and we have millions of fellow Americans- 66 million Social Security recipients- concerned and wondering whether or not they’re going to get their check. That’s what we should be focusing on right now.”
