Larson Denounces Trump’s Cost-Raising Tariffs

February 1, 2025

East Hartford, CT - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01), amember of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, denounced President Trump’s unilateral and across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

“The President’s announcement of tariffs on our neighbors will drive up prices for hardworking Americans, while paradoxically, he is prioritizing another round of tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and billion-dollar corporations,” said Larson. “Canada and Mexico are two of Connecticut’s biggest trading partners. These tariffs will hurt Connecticut workers, consumers, and businesses. This, along with his order to freeze federal funds for services people rely on like childcare centers, lifesaving cancer treatments, and community health centers, reveals his true priorities. Donald Trump and Elon Musk won’t lose a moment of sleep while everyday Americans are hurt by their policies.”

The Center for American Progress estimates that President Trump’s tariff plan could increase taxes by up to $3,900 per year for the typical family. Congressman Larson is a cosponsor of Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer’s (VA-08) Prevent Tariff Abuse Act, which would block the President from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to raise prices for working families.
