Larson: Cutting Social Security to Pay for Direct Payments is Absurd
Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Washington Post reported that the White House is looking into cutting Social Security to pay for direct payments.
“This proposal is absolutely absurd and shouldn’t be taken seriously. The idea that we would ask Americans to sell out their retirement and long term security for help during a crisis is insane. It’s a non-starter. The Republicans are trying to use this tragedy to cut and privatize Social Security. During times like these we should be strengthening and expanding Social Security. Social Security benefits not only help to boost the economy, but they also provide targeted relief to those most vulnerable to the coronavirus, seniors, peoples with disabilities, and communities of color. We’ve introduced a bill that offers a solution: the Emergency Social Security Benefits Improvement Act which expands benefits and helps those most in need. We need to have public hearings to shine a light on the Republicans’ efforts to undermine Social Security in the face of this crisis and Democrats’ support for Social Security expansion.”
