Larson: Congress Must Vote to Protect and Expand Social Security

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) spoke at the Alliance for Retired Americans' Retirement Security Symposium and highlighted the need to protect and expand Social Security now.
“Social Security is the nation’s #1 insurance program, the #1 anti-poverty program for the elderly and children, and Republicans are talking about holding the debt ceiling hostage to make cuts at a time when the program needs to be enhanced,” said Larson. “It needs to be enhanced because people are getting below poverty level checks, there hasn’t been an increase in more than 50 years, people are wrongfully penalized because of WEP/GPO, and we need to end the waiting period for disability payments. It’s time Congress does its job and votes! We must take up Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust during the lame duck session to provide the enhancements beneficiaries need now.”
"Retirement security must be a concern for all American workers, not just retirees. Strengthening and expanding Social Security and educating younger workers about the benefits of traditional pensions, so they can fight for them, are essential for both policymakers and union organizers. We are honored to have our Social Security champion, Congressman Larson, address our symposium,” said Robert Roach, Jr., President of the Alliance for Retired Americans.
