Larson Condemns Trump’s Tax Increase on American Consumers and Businesses

April 2, 2025

East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) condemned President Trump’s reckless tariffs that will raise costs on consumers and undermine American credibility on the world stage.

“Instead of improving the economy, the President is creating more instability and chaos with senseless and irresponsible tariffs that are a tax hike on the American people,” said Larson. “While tariffs can be used strategically to protect American workers and businesses, the President’s new slew of tariffs on everyone, including our allies, will hike prices by thousands of dollars per year for the average household. Over the weekend, President Trump even said he ‘couldn’t care less’ if prices go up! This tax increase will make it harder for families to make ends meet, including Connecticut workers. My Democratic colleagues and I have introduced legislation to block the President from abusing his power to unilaterally impose certain reckless tariffs like these. Congress must act.”

Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act with Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer (VA-08), which would block the President from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to raise prices for working families. Estimates from the Budget Lab at Yale University predict that President Trump’s tariff proposals could cost the average household an additional $3,400 to $4,200 annually.
