Larson Condemns Latest Trump Effort to Subvert Taxpayer Funds

August 29, 2025

East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) condemned President Trump’s unlawful effort to cancel $4.9 billion from the federal budget – including funding he signed into law.

“Once again, Donald Trump fully expects that his maneuver to deny funds promised to the people will be rubberstamped by the Republican-controlled House and Senate. We are headed back to Washington to fight against this. The public should understand that this president is all about reneging on any promise he has made,” said Larson. “Time and time again, he has gone around Congress to raise costs on working families while the rich get richer. His tariffs are hiking costs at the grocery store, pharmacy, and everywhere you shop. He canceled food assistance that was ready to go out the door – keeping 1.4 million pounds of food off pantry shelves in Connecticut. He terminated approved wind and solar projects, putting hundreds of our state's residents out of work and locking in higher electricity rates. House Democrats are ready to take on the rising cost of living. We will not join Donald Trump’s attempt to raise your costs through these illegal schemes.”

Today, President Trump and his Project 2025 budget director Russell Vought notified Congress of their plan to cancel $4.9 billion from the federal budget, including funding he signed into law to advance national security priorities. In Clinton v. City of New York, the Supreme Court made it clear the President has no authority to amend the law on his own. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has also concluded that any effort to rescind funds without Congressional approval is unlawful.
