Larson Condemns House Vote Blocking Inquiries into ‘DOGE’ Activities at Social Security
Washington, D.C. - Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after House Republicans passed a resolution to block inquiries into ‘DOGE’ operations at Social Security from coming to the floor for a vote.
“At the direction of the White House, Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ is cutting staff at the Social Security Administration, closing field and hearing offices, and paring back services – making it harder for seniors to access their earned benefits,” said Larson. “The Administration has refused to come before Congress to answer our questions under oath as they make cuts under the guise of ‘waste, fraud, and abuse.’ Democrats have filed numerous inquiries to get to the truth, but House Republicans are standing in the way. Today's vote is just the latest example – blocking our efforts to compel answers from the Administration from even being considered by the House. Congress is a co-equal branch of government that answers to the American people. Elon Musk and Donald Trump may be billionaires, but they are not above the law – and should not be shielded from accountability by the United States House of Representatives. Democrats will not be deterred by today’s vote. We will continue our oversight efforts until we get real answers about this Administration’s plans for Social Security. The American people need to hear from Elon Musk under oath, not from behind closed doors or on ‘X.’”
After Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee voted to block Ranking Member Larson’s Resolution of Inquiry into ‘DOGE’ activities at the Social Security Administration (SSA), House Democrats filed a new inquiry compelling President Trump to turn over information relating to SSA operations, as they continue to gut staff and services. Today, House Republicans passed a resolution changing House rules to prevent Resolutions of Inquiry from coming to the floor for a vote through at least September 30th.
