Larson Commends Supreme Court Decision Overturning Illegal Trump Tariff Regime

February 20, 2026

East Hartford, CT – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01), a member of the House Trade Subcommittee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Trump’s costly and unconstitutional tariffs. A recent report from the Yale Budget Lab shows that Trump’s tariffs would have cost the average household $1,700/year.

“Today, the Supreme Court handed a stunning rebuke to President Trump and his unconstitutional, cost-raising tariff regime,” said Larson. “Trump has proven time and time again that he sees the Constitution as merely a suggestion, whether it’s unlawful deployments of our troops on American streets or illegal tariffs raising costs on working families. Americans should have never had to foot the bill for this unlawful tax on consumers. In response to today’s decision, I am proud to join my colleague, Rep. Steven Horsford, to move forward with legislation to ensure our small businesses are rightfully refunded and made whole. I will continue to push back every way I can against this president’s abuses of power that are putting Americans in danger every day and raising their costs at every turn.”

Last year, Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act to prevent presidents from unilaterally abusing their power to impose cost-raising tariffs, and another bill to suspend President Trump’s tariffs on our friends and allies and require Congress to vote before new tariffs can go into effect.  In response to today’s decision, Larson and his colleague, Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04), are introducing a bill to require U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to automatically refund tariffs and customs duties paid by small and family-owned businesses within 90 days.
