Larson Commends Leader Jeffries, Joins Calls for Consensus Speaker

October 12, 2023

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for a consensus pick to serve as Speaker. More than a week since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position, House Republicans have not yet called a vote to elect a new Speaker.

“I commend Leader Jeffries and join him in calling for both parties to come together and elect a consensus candidate to serve as Speaker,” said Larson. “While Republicans quibble over their internal politics, we need to get to work for the American people to keep government open and ensure our allies, Israel and Ukraine, have the support they need from the United States Congress. I urge my Republican colleagues to join Democrats on a bipartisan path forward so the House can get back to doing its business. The American people and our allies abroad are depending on it.”
