Larson Calls for Immediate Hearings Following Reports of Political Retribution at the Social Security Administration

April 2, 2025

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after reporting revealed that the Social Security Administration (SSA) canceled contracts with Maine as political retribution against Governor Janet Mills.

“Today’s reporting further revealed that Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s true mission at the Social Security Administration is not increasing efficiency or combating fraud,” said Larson. “Their hand-picked Acting Commissioner and yes-man, Leland Dudek, ordered the cancellation of service contracts in Maine to enact political retribution after President Trump threatened their Governor, even acknowledging it would increase improper payments and fraud. Elon Musk, his ‘DOGE,’ and Acting Commissioner Dudek need to come before Congress to testify under oath immediately about their true plans for Social Security and the consequences of these reckless and unethical actions. As the Trump Administration continues to dismantle SSA from the inside, firing staff, closing offices, and cutting services, the Republican Majority is protecting Trump, Musk, and their cronies, not the American people and their earned benefits.”

Ranking Member Larson has requested an immediate Social Security Subcommittee hearing on the state of the SSA and joined Ways and Means Committee Democrats to call for a full Committee hearing to bring Elon Musk in to testify about DOGE’s plans.
