Larson: Bipartisan Government Funding Package Excludes Republican Closed-Door Commission to Slash Social Security

March 22, 2024

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the House passed government funding legislation that excluded House Republicans’ demand for a commission to fast-track cuts to Medicare and Social Security.

“Once again, we have defeated Republicans’ plan for a closed-door commission to gut Social Security,” said Larson. “In the past two weeks, we have seen former President Trump call to cut benefits and House Republicans release a budget with $1.5 trillion in cuts to Social Security. Slashing Social Security is a key priority for the Republican Party, and I commend the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and Social Security Works for working in unison as we oppose this harmful commission. In addition, I thank Leader Jeffries and Ranking Member DeLauro for leading Democrats in delivering on President Biden’s promise: House Republicans tried to cut Social Security and Democrats stopped them."

Last month, Rep. Larson stood with labor leaders to oppose Republicans’ commission that would gut critical programs and benefits for our seniors, veterans, and children after the House Budget Committee voted to advance the proposal. More than 100 advocacy groups and 116 House Democrats have come out against the proposed commission.
